City Reviews: Amsterdam

Octoberfest in Amsterdam

I visited Amsterdam in October of 2006.  I choose October because it was a little cheaper than going in spring.  They say the best time to visit Amsterdam is whenever possible. They were right, no matter what time of year, I’m sure the city would be as beautiful as it was when I was there.  I stayed at the Sofitel Amsterdam The Grand located right between two canals.  It was luxurious but affordable. I only ate at the restaurant in the hotel once.  They boast authentic French cuisine and I wanted to ensure I obtained a good sampling of the local cuisine before it was time to leave.  Some other restaurants I tried were the Sea Palace, Bordewijk, d'Vijff Vlieghen and Lieve Belgisch. Unfortunately I was only in Amsterdam for a week or I probably would have tried even more places.

When I first booked the trip, I never expected to spend the entire week in Amsterdam.  I thought I would be using the central location and train connections to travel to other major European cities.  I was very wrong.  Amsterdam was so exciting and full of life, a week wasn’t even enough to enjoy all the culture it has to offer.  My first two stops were the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.  If you love Van Gogh, you can enjoy over 200 paintings by him in this museum.  It is the most bountiful collection I have ever seen.  The next place I tried to tour was the Rijksmuseum, but I wasn’t able to go in because it was closed for renovations.  That was a disappointment, but on the brighter side it gave me reason to return.

My favorite part of Amsterdam was the night life.  I had no idea Marijuana was legal there, not that I had an interest in trying it.  I just couldn’t believe how relaxed everyone was. Out of all the places I tried, the Sugar Factory seemed to be the hot spot for live music and dance. Every night there was a little different than the last. What incredible fun and the locals couldn’t have been more welcoming.  Amsterdam was a surprisingly rewarding experience.  The weather held up and I managed not to get lost once.  Certainly a good choice for a vacation spot and I wouldn’t hesitate to return, especially since I never did get to see the Rijksmuseum.

My Travel Pro Crew 7 Rolling Garment Bag was the perfect piece of luggage for my trip to Amsterdam. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for stylish, yet sturdy luggage.
